On September 1st in Colorado Springs, CO, Daimler Trucks launched its latest Class 8 on-highway truck, the 2018 model year Next Generation Cascadia. What an amazing truck to add to our line of products. This new truck will strengthen Freightliner’s position as the leading on-highway truck manufacturer, and continues to demonstrate Freightliner and Detroit’s undisputed market leadership. As Martin Daum, Daimler Trucks North America CEO, shared during the unveiling of this truck, the next-generation Cascadia “is a mind-boggling 8% more efficient than the Cascadia Evolution, the current most efficient truck on the road.”
Aerodynamic enhancements and fuel economy improvements were not the only areas of focus when designing this new truck. The interior upgrades and modifications have received more attention than any previous Freightliner truck, and these improvements were made with the focus on improving the driver experience. Enhancements such as a redesigned sleeper area with more cabinet space, accommodations for flat screen TV’s, larger refrigerators, a driver’s loft with dinette table/work station and aircraft inspired LED ambient lighting are all examples of these improvements.
And don’t forget about the technicians servicing these trucks. Many improvements were made to ensure this new truck is best in class when it comes to serviceability, and kudos to Justin Sitzmann, a diesel tech from TCC – Lincoln, who had previously spent time with Daimler engineers in Portland to provide important input in the development of the redesigned front bumper mounting system.
Connectivity is also a key component of this new product. Current Detroit Connect features such as Virtual Technician remote diagnostics will remain, and new features designed to provide deeper insights on fuel efficiency and safety performance, as well as the introduction of a new platform allowing for over-the-air engine parameter programming and other updates will also be available. Very exciting things are taking place!
