NDEE anticipates awarding rebates for eight diesel or gasoline replacement buses and two propane replacement buses. The number of rebates offered in this category is subject to change depending on the number of applications in all rebate categories.

An individual applicant may apply for one rebate for one bus.  Previous recipients of school bus rebates from NDEE are eligible to apply, but preference will be given to schools that are not previous recipients.

U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) 2021 DERA School Bus Rebates Open

The EPA 2021 DERA School Bus Rebates will offer approximately $10 million to public and private fleet owners for the replacement of old diesel school buses with new buses certified to EPA’s cleanest emission standards. Selected applicants that scrap and replace their old diesel buses will receive a rebate of $20,000-$65,000 per bus depending on the fuel type of the replacement bus.  Applications must be submitted by November 5, 2021, 4:00 pm EST.

Public school districts, municipalities, and private fleet owners under contract to a public entity are eligible to apply. Private schools are not eligible for this program.

Fleets with up to 100 school buses may submit one application listing up to 10 buses for scrappage and replacement.  Fleets with more than 100 school buses may submit up to two applications each listing up to 10 different buses for scrappage and replacement.

To be eligible for replacement, a diesel bus must be operational, have a 2006 or older engine model year, have a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating of 10,001 lbs or more, and have accumulated at least 10,000 miles transporting students over either the previous 12 months or calendar year 2019, or been in use for at least four days per week on average between 9/1/2019 and 2/29/2020.
